How to Remove Gel Nail Polish at Home Without Damaging Your Nails

We know the struggle: you’ve been rocking that cute af gel manicure, but now it’s time for a change. The salon is fully booked, or maybe you’re just in the mood for a cosy night in. Either way, we’ve got you covered! Removing gel polish at home is easy if you know the right tricks.

Here’s how to remove gel nail polish at home

What You’ll Need

Nail file

Cuticle pusher or orange stick

Acetone (the real deal—none of that non-acetone stuff)

Cotton balls or pads

Aluminium foil cut into 10 (small) rectangles

Buffer

Cuticle oil

A bowl of patience (because good things take time!)

Here’s Your Step-by-Step Guide

1. Buff, Buff, Buff

First things first, you need to break that gel seal. Gently buff the top layer of your gel nails with a nail file. This helps the acetone penetrate better. Don’t go too hard—just enough to remove the shine.

2. Acetone Soak

Next, soak a cotton ball or pad in acetone. Place it directly on your nail and wrap it tightly with a small piece of aluminium foil. Repeat this for each nail. It’s going to look like you’ve got tiny space helmets on your fingertips, but trust the process!

3. Chill Time

Now, kick back and relax for about 15-20 minutes. This is your time to catch up on that new series (we personally recommend Real Housewives of Beverly Hills), meditate, or just dream about your next nail design. The acetone is working its magic under those foils.

4. The Reveal

After your little chill session, unwrap one of your nails. Use a cuticle pusher or orange stick to gently push the gel polish off. It should come off easily. Do this for all nails. If it’s being stubborn, wrap it back up and give it a few more minutes.

5. Clean-Up Crew

Once all the gel is off, you might notice some residue or stubborn spots. Gently buff your nails again to smooth them out. Be gentle—your natural nails need love, not a workout!

6. Nourish & Flourish

Your nails have been through a lot, so now it’s time to pamper them. Apply some cuticle oil and massage in. Follow up with a rich hand cream to keep your nails and hands hydrated and happy.

BONUS – Pro Tips

Avoid Peeling

We know it’s tempting, but peeling off your gel polish can damage your natural nails. Resist the urge!

Hydrate

Keep your nails and cuticles hydrated. This makes them more flexible and less prone to damage.

Take Breaks

Give your nails a breather between gel manicures. Your nails need a little vacation too!

Removing gel polish at home doesn’t have to be a nail-biting experience (literally). With the right tools and a little bit of patience, you can keep your nails healthy and looking fab.
